13. Initial Assessment of English Language and Study Skills

Purpose: Ensure that all learners admitted to the TESOL 300-hour program have the language and study skills required to succeed.

Policy:

  • The minimum entry requirement is B2 (Upper-Intermediate) on the CEFR scale. This ensures learners can manage academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking tasks in English.

  • Proof of proficiency can be demonstrated in one of the following ways:

    1. Submission of a valid English proficiency certificate:

      • IELTS 6.0 or higher

      • TOEFL iBT 72 or higher

      • Equivalent international qualification at B2 level or above

    2. Proof of citizenship from a native English-speaking country, confirmed via passport (e.g., UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa).

    3. If neither of the above applies, the applicant must complete an oral interview with us to verify their English level.

  • The oral interview assesses:

    • Spoken fluency and clarity

    • Listening comprehension

    • Ability to respond appropriately to academic and professional prompts

  • Results are used to confirm student suitability. If a student does not meet the B2 standard, they may be offered guidance or alternative study options, such as enrolling in Tellem ESL’s live speaking classes to improve their proficiency before reapplying.

14. Provision for Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (Non-Native English Speakers)

Purpose: Ensure inclusivity and academic support for non-native English speakers enrolled in the TESOL program.

Policy:

  • Tellem ESL welcomes applications from non-native English speakers who meet the minimum English proficiency requirements.

  • To support these learners, the institution provides:

    • Simplified course explanations where needed (glossaries of TESOL terminology).

    • Supplementary resources focused on academic writing, lesson planning vocabulary, and pronunciation.

    • Email-based support where students can request clarifications in plain English.

    • Guidance on adapting teaching methods to their own linguistic and cultural contexts.

  • Tutors are trained to provide constructive feedback that acknowledges language challenges while upholding academic standards.

  • The course emphasizes developing clear and professional communication skills in English, both written and spoken, which are essential for TESOL certification.
